Key Stage 3

All boys study both French and German for 3 hours a fortnight each. They work from a variety of materials but each boy has a text book to keep for the year. In French this is Expo and in German Logo. We also have site licences for Linguascope and Zut/Gut and the electronic versions of the textbook to support learning in ICT.

We offer a variety of visits abroad which can vary from year to year. Currently there is a year 7 French visit to a chateau in northern France; a Y8 trip to the Christmas market in Lille; a Y9 visit to Cologne  and a Y7 day trip to the German Christmas market in Birmingham.

In addition, the boys in Year 7 and 8 have 6 hours of Chinese teaching by a visiting Chinese teacher in the autumn term. We also like to invite French and German theatre groups to school to perform in their native language.

Boys have the opportunity to subscribe to language magazines to support their learning at home. There is a weekly MFL club run by the language assistants at lunchtime.

Key Stage 4

The exam board we use is EDEXCEL. Pupils can choose either French, German or Spanish (from scratch) or have the opportunity to do two languages at GCSE.

As in KS3 pupils have their own text book and there is additional help on the department web pages.

The two foreign language assistants work with each class once a week to support their oral practice.

Revision days at Bristol university are offered along with extra help at lunchtime and after school as the exams approach.

There is a German exchange in Year 10 to Gottingen.

Key Stage 5

The A level course is run by OCR. Pupils have a weekly individual 30 minute session with the foreign language assistant and are expected to have a high interest in France or Germany.

Students are expected to read/listen to the foreign news via the Internet daily.
