The Crypt School has a rich history and an exciting future.
1528 John Cooke, mercer and four times Mayor of the City of Gloucester made a will in which he directed his wife “stablish and ordeyn a contynuall frescole of gramer for the erudiction of children and scolers”.
1539 A tripartite deed was made by Dame Joan Cooke, the Mayor and Burgesses of Gloucester and the Bailiffs and Citizens of Worcester as to the endowments for the benefit of the school. At the date of this agreement the school had already been established at the Church of St. Mary de Crypt: in this way that the school gained its name.
1889 The school moved to new buildings in Brunswick Road known to countless generations of Old Cryptians, as ‘Friars Orchard’. This site is now occupied by the GLOSCAT buildings.
1987 Admission of girls into the Sixth Form.
1992 Grant Maintained status.
1998 Successful OFSTED [School Inspection].
1999 The school becomes a Foundation School.
2000 Whole school art exhibition with private view for parents. Four form entry now
through years 7-
2001 Ranked 9th in the DofE's list of ‘Most Improved Schools’, Department for education & Skills, School Achievement Award 2002 & 2003
2002 & 2003 Received School Achievement Award for Academic Success.
2003 Granted Specialist Status in Science.
2004 In top 50 schools nationally for value added education at key stage 3. Successful OFSTED inspection and report.
2005 Award of Artsmark to recognise excellence in the delivery of Art, Music and
Drama. 95% of pupils gained 5 A* -
2006 School is reaccredited with Investors in People. Year 7 pupils invited to take
part in ‘E-
2007 Best ever A level results. Appointment of Mr. Jonathan Standen as Headmaster.
2008 Most successful Ofsted to date. Second phase Specialist Science College Status. Award of High Performing Specialist School Status by DCSF.
2009 : Award of Second Specialism in Languages.
