Part of the ethos in the Sixth Form is to develop the whole student – beyond the simply academic – and there is no better way to do this that to offer a wide-ranging package of enrichment.
Each Wednesday afternoon students have the chance to select from a number of activities, or to devise their own enrichment interests. The school has a rich sporting heritage and offer formal seasonal team sports such as rugby, football, basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, cricket and athletics. Further to this, we provide the opportunity to achieve a community qualification linked to these in the form of the Junior and Senior Sports Leaders Awards, in which sixth formers often work with younger pupils of primary school age.
Many sixth formers also use Enrichment afternoons to pursue individual sporting activities or even to train for particular events, competitive teams or championships. The new gym being built at the school in the coming months is also something that many of the students are looking forward to.
Many of the girls in the sixth form work with our Specialist Sports Co-ordinator, and can select from a number of activities including keep-fit, aerobics, dance, tai chi, swimming, self-defence or trips to the gym.
Some students pursue other areas on a Wednesday, including a variety of drama or musical experiences or rehearsals. We offer practical cookery workshops for our students to give them advice and guidance on how to buy and prepare cheap but healthy food when they go to university. Other students use the time to undertake planning and preparation for their Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver and Gold Awards. This year a number of sixth formers also organised a very useful first aid course in school.
Wednesday afternoons are also times when our students look to enhance their future applications to universities, trainers or employers by carrying out local work experience and voluntary work. Others undertake other charity or citizenship projects in the local community, or even choose to act as subject mentors in school for pupils in the lower years.
And of course Wednesday Enrichment afternoons also provide an opportunity for students to take on broader study experiences through the AQA Baccalaureate or the Open University YASS courses.
Clearly there is a lot to choose from. And if we are not currently offering an activity that interests you, just let us now – we’ll see how we can support you to make it possible.
